Sonya Preliminary Work

I've done 6 commissions now for and this one was the most challenging as I really wanted the picture to speak for the character, so I ended up doing lots of sketches until I came up with the finished article. These are the 5 best. Hope you like 'em Greg. Sorry you haven't seen these yet! Maybe some ideas for the future!

1) I wanted to show that she was obviously bigger and taller than the usual human and thought that having her grasping a barely conscious and beat-up bad guy would be a good idea. But then I realised it was way too similar to my very first commission I did or Greg. I also wasn't sure about the should I/shall'n't I crush his head idea, thought it might be a little too dark. I did toy with idea of making the baddie a robot but then the scene loses it's tension 'cos there's not so much at stake.

2) Nice flying shot, hair flowing like she's descending fast. Good figure and could've worked in a smart background but too similar again to another picture I've done of Sonya. Also, not easy to show the scale.

3) Similar to 2 but a bit more posey. If you're posing like this then you know someone's looking at you and it didn't really do enough storytelling about Sonya.

4) I really like the pose of this one but again a little dark. Would be little macabre if she was stood there holding the head of a villain. Again, could lowered the severity of this by making the baddy a robot or maybe some kind of generic monster but felt it was better to move on.

5) Now this coulda been pretty good. I just didn't get the swing of the torso quite correct to really sell her swinging a punch. This WAS going to be her taking down a robot. The idea was to have her shattering a drone of some sort with a massive right hook, I was going to have all these bits of mechanics disintegrating around the punch to give it some depth. In order to make this work though I think a lot more foreshortening would be needed on the body too and at this angle we probably wouldn't have seen so much of her body.
