90 mins: Superhero Torso by Bambs79 90 mins: Superhero Torso by Bambs79
Well, this was 90 minutes of work. Bummer.

Trying to suss out anatomy and foreshortening is not as easy as I was hoping. It's difficult to explain but drawing comic art/anatomy isn't the same as drawing from reference - it's much more stylised and dynamic. When I draw something from reference it often lacks the kind of 'impact' I feel my last 3 deviations have. But after all, these are all about the practice so I'm hopefully learning every time I do something like this - which is what I want!

Will likely turn it into something finished at a later date!

I understand what you mean about the difference! I often use reference for a second, refined version of a sketch, and it often looks static and forced (as opposed to dynamic and Off Model)

Thanks for writing. Yeah, I think that comic figures are much more 'stylistic' or 'exaggerated' than I at first realised. I believe that a lot of us are still struggling to get better at anatomy and making it look correct when a number of great comic artists out there are able to exaggerate/caricature anatomy and make it work even better. At the moment I'm really into artists like Mike Mignola, James Harren, Cliff Rathburn and Ryan Ottley. I'm forever just studying their comics and trying to work out what they do and apply it my style of drawing.

Thanks, yeah, I kinda have a thing for extreme foreshortening, I think it really helps a pic look more dynamic so this was a bit of practice. :w00t:

It's pretty cool, the only trouble I have is that there are so many awesome comic artists out there to be inspired by!

I wonder whether the disappointment you express relates to photographic depth of field effects; motion blur/wide-angle distorion/telephoto compression... I don't mean to suggest that I know what I'm talking about, let alone what you're discussing, but reference images aren't generally shot to maximize the kind of supernatural impact I think you're striving for -- subjects are generally photographed with a single lens with the intent of minimizing perceptual distortion, an aim that runs entirely counter to your objective.

The dynamics are quite nice... Totally epic pose, too. Lot's of strength in the character details!

Your style is awesome, and these exercises are really fun to watch! Thanks for sharing. :)
This is inspiring me to continue my sketching! - I'm actually shooting for a similar style, too... It's a hard transition for me, though.

Thanks for the nice comment dude, glad you like the pic! Pleased that you like my style and that you like watching the exercises, they're fun to do as I'm hoping to get quicker and also build a body of work up too! Keep up the good work, your line work is very good and your colours are awesome! :w00t:
